Light band
Conventional rearing systems:
Illumination by natural light is mandatory for new constructions, which means those taken into use after 13 March 2002. The light apertures must correspond to at least 3 percent of the surface area and must guarantee even distribution of the light. Light bands in the roof with a darkening facility are recommended. In the case of new buildings constructed as from 2005 side windows must not exceed 12 m in spatial depth. Direct exposure to the sun is to be avoided. Even illumination of the area, in which the animals are active, is guaranteed in the barn. Laying nests, perches and rest areas must be constructed in more shaded areas.
Organic rearing systems:
Daylight is required for barns, which have been constructed or converted subsequent to 24 August 2000 for the production of organic eggs. An exemption may be requested from the control authority for old barns. The window area must correspond to a minimum of 5% of the barn surface area and must guarantee even distribution of the light.
